PROGRAM

I am currently involved with two families using NACD programs for their kiddos with Down syndrome.  One is my own family, for my ten-year-old baby sister who is now nine years into her program; the other is a family I work for, who have become good friends.  I go to their house three days a week to do their four-year-old’s program with him.

These programs are individualized and focus on brain development to improve function.  For my little sister, that started with physical issues (low muscle tone, poor reflexes) and now includes her schooling.  For the little boy I work with, we are pushing his processing level pretty hard and that has helped tremendously with things like potty training and speech.  He is now beginning things like sight reading (flash cards) and pre-modular math.

For more information about NACD’s approach, visit their website  and their Down syndrome microsite.  This will not give you details, as each program is developed specifically for the individual, but it will allow you to understand their philosophy on special needs and brain development.
