we have lightning bugs in our yard now.

why is that?
what makes a place good for fireflies?

is it kind of like having squirrels?

once

your neighborhood gets old enough
,
and your trees get big enough,

they come and visit?

why do lightning bugs visit?

and more importantly…

why didn’t they before?

  1. I was always told it had to do with pollution.
There was a slight north wind today.  Maybe it’s related?
I remember seeing lightning bugs off highway 3 between 517 and NASA 1 a year or two ago and thinking it was odd.

  2. I don’t know the why’s of fireflies, but this takes me back…when I was a wee lad growing up in the summers here, I and the neighborhood kids would catch the lightin’ bugs and put them in mason jars with air holes punched in the top and thusly stay out after it got dark…the challenge was to not lose the ones you had when adding to the jar, which I never mastered…at twilight and after there seemed to be magic in the summer air, and the bugs were like tiny stars contributing to the enchantment…but I didn’t think about it that way then…and haven’t in years…

  3. just because jon made me nostalgic, and because I wonder about fireflies too, I must share about the most amazing firefly experience I had last year…I was at a cemetary at dusk, and just sitting quietly doing not much of anything, and suddenly, as far as I could see, light upon light upon light suddenly emerged from the grass, and hovered above it, never leaving but just filling up the entire cemetary, and I just sat there, in awe of God’s awesome power and beauty. It was like putting them in a huge jar and I just got to be inside with them, and none of them died in the process. sweet, if I do say so myself. : )
other than that, i know nothing about fireflies. but it’s nice to meet you, I have been reading your site for a while, and just haven’t said hi. I’m jenny, and friends with jon and david and bobbie. I enjoy your posts, and your sweet heart and spirit and love for the Lord. : )

  4. LIghtning bugs are the coolest little creations. It makes you wonder what God was thinking.
Helen is doing great, and so is Joseph. Ryan is healthy and in his mommy’s arms. I think they’re coming home from the hospital on Friday morning. Isn’t he the cutest little kid?
